Under the ASME A17.1-2019 safety code, a service elevator is legally classified as a modified passenger elevator designed to carry both pedestrians and light freight, whereas a freight elevator is a distinct, heavy-duty industrial class engineered with separate structural and power specifications to handle massive loads up to 100,000 lbs.
